Message from Council Chairman Rob Fowler

The exciting and challenging theme of our new International President Dr. Jitsuhiro Yamada of Japan is "Dignity. Harmony. Humanity - Bringing Dignity to Others through Humanitarian Service".

In his inaugural address to 15000 delegates at the recent International Convention in Honolulu IP Dr. Yamada - a neurosurgeon from japan - stressed the need for Lions throughout the world to address the urgent needs of vulnerable children. Childhood for everyone should be a happy time free from abuse, danger, anxiety, discrimination and neglect. It should be a time where children can learn and be loved and cared for.

Under this banner of hope for children our International President calls on all Lions to expand service to children by:

Supporting and brightening the outlook for children in hospitals
Responding to the needs of children in refugee camps
Addressing the needs of hungry children
Continuing to expand the Lions Reading Action Program

There are many other areas where Lions can make a substantial difference in the lives of children so that they will be good citizen's and effective leaders in their own families and in society.

Our Council of Governor's is committed to making a difference and newly elected District Governor's Sue Charles, Roy Michas, Willie van der Schyf and Bokkie Oberholzer will be guiding this initiative to make Southern Africa a better place for children in need. I have no doubt that Lions throughout our Multiple District will take up the challenge and network effectively with other concerned bodies and institutions to achieve the goals set out by International President Yamada.

"Dignity, Harmony, Humanity" are such deeply meaningful words in the context of all the stresses of life faced by so many. Not to mention those living in and caught up in conflict situations.

Let us all work together as Lions and civil society to make this world a better place for children in particular, but also for everyone that has fallen though the widening cracks in our overburdened social and institutional systems and therefore no longer able to see a positive outlook and future for themselves.

Where there is a need. There is a Lion!

Sincerely yours,

Council Chairman Rob Fowler
